The Blue Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius azureus) is a broadly stable species but the specific blue morph (azureus) is considered highly vulnerable by many conservation organizations. It is widely believed to be one of the most threatened of all poison dart frogs in Central and South America. This high level of threat is primarily because the blue poison dart frog is only found in a few small, geographically isolated "rainforest islands" surrounded by the Sipaliwini Savanna in southern Suriname. The blue morph is highly susceptible to human activities—such as illegal collecting for the pet trade—as well as natural environmental factors like drought. Because of these intense localized pressures, conservationists note they are capable of becoming Critically Endangered or Extinct in a very short period if these factors are not held in check.
